Heraklion was plunged into mourning once again after news that 36-year-old Maria, the woman who was seriously injured in the deadly fire at the EGOH stadium, passed away. The unfortunate woman had been hospitalized since late August at Thriasio Hospital’s specialized Latsio Burns Center, fighting for her life. However, on Sunday, September 21, 2025, she succumbed to her severe injuries.
Heraklion: Critically injured
Maria had suffered extensive burns covering 34% of her body. Her breathing was mechanically supported, but her health condition was extremely critical. Despite doctors’ efforts and her family’s hope, she could not survive.
The tragedy that shocked Heraklion
The fire that forever changed the lives of two young people broke out on the evening of August 22 in the EGOH stadium locker rooms. At that time, 40-year-old Nikos and 36-year-old Maria were inside. The flames spread quickly, trapping them in the space.
The 40-year-old man managed, after a superhuman effort, to escape, but suffered very serious burns. Unfortunately, a few days later, on August 26, he too succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind grief and questions about how the fatal incident occurred.
Strong fire department forces immediately rushed to the scene, with five vehicles and 20 firefighters. The service personnel found Maria in a semi-conscious state inside the locker rooms and managed to free her, giving her the first hope of survival. However, the serious burns she suffered determined her tragic fate.
Double mourning for victims’ families
The loss of two young people within a month has caused shock and grief in the local community. The story of the fire at the EGOH stadium remains etched as one of the darkest moments in recent years in Heraklion, with the victims’ families mourning their loved ones who were lost so unjustly.
