Thousands of citizens have proceeded to issue a new ID card before obtaining their personal number. It is reminded that until November 5, citizens can issue their Personal Number, with the option to choose the first two digits of their tax number prefix, either through the myInfo application at pa.gov.gr, or through Citizen Service Centers (KEP) and Consular Authorities.
It is worth noting that the new personal number should be recorded on the new ID card. The extension was granted so that citizens have the maximum time possibility to choose the first two digits of the Personal Number, as provided by the relevant legislative provisions. The third digit in sequence is alphabetical and is generated automatically.
What is the solution for those who obtained new ID cards without personal number
From June 29, 2025, for the completion of the ID card issuance procedure, it is an essential prerequisite that the applicant – provided they are eligible – has a Personal Number. Exceptions to this rule include cases of citizens who have taken the necessary actions to issue a Personal Number, but the process was not completed through no fault of their own. Additionally, citizens through Gov.gr Wallet will have the ability for immediate and secure access to the Personal Number. This new functionality has particular value for those citizens who have issued the new type of ID card before being assigned their personal number, as this specific information is not recorded on the ID cards of these citizens. With its addition, this gap is covered and equal access to important personal information is ensured.
The service will be activated after an identification process and will provide citizens the ability to view their Personal Number at any time.
Minister Dimitris Papastergiou stated: “Gov.gr Wallet is evolving into a basic tool for citizen interaction with the state. The new capability ensures that every citizen will be able to remember and have access to their Personal Number whenever needed, enhancing transparency and effectiveness of digital governance”.
Since the new system began operating in early June until today, over 1.3 million Personal Numbers have been issued and more than 423,000 citizen records have been corrected. Personal number issuance can be done through the myInfo application at pa.gov.gr or through KEP and Consular Authorities.
At this year’s 89th International Thessaloniki Trade Fair, the ministry will present all new Gov.gr Wallet functions at pavilion 12, offering citizens interactive experiences and updates on its use.
In case a citizen has obtained a new ID card but without their personal number being printed on it, and wishes it to be recorded, they can request replacement of their document, following the usual procedure and submitting the required documents for ID issuance (appointment scheduling, issuance fees, etc.).
What is needed for citizens to obtain new ID cards
The application for issuing a new ID card is made in person at the competent issuing Authority, with the following documents:
Digital format photograph
The photo can be taken directly at the Authority or through a certified photographer who uploads the photo to the myPhoto application on gov.gr. The citizen receives a code, which they connect with their tax number and authorize the “Issuance/Replacement of Greek Citizens’ ID Cards” application to retrieve it.
Application – Statutory Declaration
Completed and printed by the issuing Authority, with data drawn automatically from the Citizens Registry of the Ministry of Interior. The citizen signs it both electronically and by hand.
Electronic fee of 10 euros
For families with many children, the cost is reduced to 5 euros, while in all cases a Greek Police stamp worth 0.50 euros is added. All fees are issued through the e-Fee service.
Fingerprints
During the process, two index finger prints are taken with special electronic equipment. In case of inability, other fingers are used in a specific order. If fingerprint collection is temporarily impossible, the new ID card is issued with one-year validity instead of ten.
Additional options and details
The name, surname and patronymic will be recorded in Latin characters as well, according to ELOT 743 standard. If someone wishes different spelling, they must provide a document proving it. Optionally, blood type and Rhesus can be recorded, with relevant medical certificate or blood donor card. If there are tattoos on the face, a medical certificate certifying their permanent nature is required.
