The revolution in traffic control is arriving in the capital. These Athens streets will get AI cameras in the coming days, radically changing how traffic violations are detected. After the successful pilot implementation in Thessaloniki, the system is expanding to cover the most central axes of Attica.

Where smart cameras will be installed in Athens
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in cooperation with the Hellenic Police is proceeding with the installation of advanced surveillance systems. The first artificial intelligence cameras tested on Megalou Alexandrou Avenue in Thessaloniki proved their effectiveness, already recording the first violator who was using a mobile phone while driving. These Athens streets will get AI cameras as priority, focusing on areas with high traffic and frequent violations. The strategic placement aims for maximum coverage of the capital’s critical road axes.
Technological capabilities of the new surveillance systems
The advanced cameras have impressive recognition capabilities. They can automatically detect:
• Mobile phone use while driving
• Running red traffic lights
• Speed limit violations
• Not wearing seatbelts or helmets
• Dangerous maneuvers and other serious violations
Automated penalty enforcement process
When the system detects a violation, the documentation process is immediately activated. The camera photographs the vehicle and driver, automatically sending the citation to the violator’s digital mailbox through gov.gr.
The innovative system is not limited only to digital ticket issuance. It simultaneously updates the driver scoring system and automatically proceeds with electronic license suspension when required.
Ensuring accuracy and avoiding errors
To ensure reliability, all recorded material is sent to a special server for processing. The violator is immediately notified via SMS, while the final citation is transferred to the gov.gr digital wallet after violation confirmation.
In the case of the driver detected using a mobile phone in Thessaloniki, if the system wasn’t in pilot phase, they would have automatically received a 350 euro fine and 30-day license suspension. The implementation of the new Traffic Code with stricter penalties, combined with artificial intelligence technology, aims to drastically reduce violations and traffic accidents in our country.
