Not one, not two, but eight kilograms of pure heroin was what a young foreign national attempted to smuggle into our country before being arrested following a police operation. The 30-year-old was spotted at Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” acting suspiciously while collecting his luggage. Authorities decided to conduct a search and discovered a total of 35 improvised packages containing heroin in his suitcase, with a total gross weight of 8 kilograms and 93 grams.
Athens airport heroin arrest: International drug trafficking network under investigation
Police knew that drug mules would be arriving at the airport on international flights with narcotics in their luggage. What appears to emerge from investigations so far is that the 30-year-old is likely a member of an international drug trafficking network.
Simultaneous searches conducted in the airport’s external parking areas to locate the person who would collect him – usually members of the drug buyers’ team – yielded no results, unlike in other similar cases. The 30-year-old trafficker is charged with violations of narcotics law, while his mobile phone has been confiscated and is being examined by authorities to identify the drug recipients and members of the international gang that organized the heroin shipment.
The accused has already been brought before the competent Athens Prosecutor, from whom he requested and received time to prepare his defense.
