The brotherhood of Sinai Monastery has elected Archimandrite Simeon Papadopoulos as its new abbot. It should be noted that Archbishop Damianos had officially submitted his resignation from the position of abbot of Sinai Monastery through a letter, and for today, September 14th, a General Assembly had been convened with the sole purpose of electing a new Abbot and Archbishop of Sinai, Pharan and Raitho.
He received 19 votes out of 20 cast, with his own vote being blank according to ancient custom. Both sides of the Brotherhood ultimately rallied around the candidacy of Archimandrite Simeon Papadopoulos, without any dispute regarding the process. This development, of one person’s clear victory without any controversy, is considered an important foundation for establishing a climate of harmony and unity in the Monastery.
With the election of the new abbot, an end has been put to the turbulent succession process of former Archbishop Damianos, who officially resigned after 52 years at the head of the Monastery.
