Starting tomorrow, Saturday, September 13, the 24-hour operation of the metro begins in Athens. This is a government initiative that was “embraced” by Athenians during its pilot operation this summer. Today, parapolitika.gr and Manos Anthoulakis ask how you view the 24-hour metro operation on Saturdays, when most young people travel for entertainment purposes.
“Do you believe the metro can help reduce traffic accidents?” was the main question. The overwhelming majority answered “yes“.
Some of the responses:
– Definitely. Definitely because drunk or intoxicated people won’t be driving, this will reduce all that a bit. Because there will be fewer people on the road, especially at night when someone might drink anything. It’s much safer if you travel and return home by metro.
– The situation, first of all, is something that hasn’t changed for many years. There’s no road education. These are many things. Certainly the way we Greeks drive, alcohol is often involved, speed is excessive. The lack of guardrails in many difficult areas like Crete, mountainous regions, villages.
– Some heavier penalties need to be imposed. I think this is only up to the state. Certainly, this is also the state that doesn’t enforce more strictly when anyone can overlook some danger that might happen to them. But I think citizens also bear responsibility because it starts with us. Changing the horn isn’t enough. This should start from a very young age for every person. That is, we should learn some basic things from school.
– I believe it will somehow help that starting Saturday, the metro operates 24 hours. Many people think twice about taking a taxi, so certainly the metro helps.
– This will definitely help because on Saturday most people are out at night, drinking. It’s good to take a taxi, to leave with our public transport, I believe it will help.
