Lake Mornos has recorded its smallest area since 2014, according to the latest meteorological data, creating serious concerns about water reserves. The National Observatory of Athens has activated the Mornos artificial lake Observatory (www.meteo.gr/mornos) for this reason, providing citizens with updates through satellite images and comparative data. The satellite images are updated every two weeks and compared with previous recordings.

Lake Mornos: Declining area and water reserves
The most recent photograph of the lake, from September 9, 2025, shows that the area is only 8.9 square kilometers, down from 11.4 in September 2024 and 15.3 in 2023, which represents the average value of the last decade. The reservoir’s water reserves follow the same declining trend, reduced by 42%. In September 2024, the lake contained 328 million cubic meters of water, while this year it’s limited to 193 million.

Rainfall measurements are taken from two METEO stations: at Koniako, north of the basin, and at the Mornos dam. The data is updated daily. The Observatory also monitors snow cover in the area and compares it with the 2005-2024 average. In winter 2025, snow cover was 20% lower than average, with approximately 65% of days showing lower coverage compared to previous years.
