How the fatal accident occurred on the Corinth-Patras highway
The tragedy occurred on Thursday evening, September 11, when a vehicle driven by a 70-year-old woman from Aigio was traveling in the wrong direction on the national highway for approximately 1 kilometer. The collision was severe, causing the 70-year-old’s vehicle to burst into flames. The woman became trapped and was burned beyond recognition.
The other vehicle carried the 54-year-old driver and another man. Both were freed by fire department operations and transported to the hospital. However, the 54-year-old man succumbed to his injuries.
According to police sources cited by local media, the 70-year-old entered the Olympia Highway from the Selianitika junction heading toward Patras. When she reached the Panagopoula tunnels, instead of continuing normally, she chose the route used by hazardous cargo vehicles. She then became disoriented and made a U-turn, driving toward Aigio.
According to witness accounts, despite signals from oncoming drivers who avoided collision by making evasive maneuvers, the woman had not realized she was driving in the wrong direction. Shortly after, she collided with a Ford Raptor, and her vehicle, after several rollovers, ended up on the shoulder and caught fire.
