A full investigation into the traffic accident that occurred on Wednesday afternoon (10/9) in Piraeus is currently underway, when a tram collided with a stationary city bus on Mikras Asias Street. The competent authorities, with the assistance of STA.SY and O.SY, are examining video footage as well as the tram’s speed data to determine the exact circumstances of the accident. From the first moment, management and employees of both companies arrived at the scene and supported the operation of the Traffic Police and EKAB emergency services, according to the latest update they issued.
Discharge for most of the injured
“Having as our main priority the health of the injured, passengers and drivers, management and employees of both companies were from the beginning at the side of those transported to hospitals,” the announcement emphasizes. A total of 21 people were discharged Wednesday evening from Thriasio and KAT hospitals, while on Thursday afternoon a minor child was also discharged from “Agia Sophia” Children’s Hospital. At KAT hospital, one female passenger and the tram driver continue to be hospitalized in a cardiology clinic, without their health condition being cause for concern. The same evening, arrangements were made so that passengers who were discharged and had no means of transportation could return safely to their homes.
The bus driver’s role
The announcement also notes that “the bus driver, experienced and operationally competent, followed regulations to the letter and proceeded with all required actions.” He was the first to notify authorities and provided first aid to passengers before being transported himself to Thriasio with a head injury, for which he received discharge.
Apology and support from STA.SY and O.SY
“STA.SY and O.SY express once again our sorrow for the incident, we apologize to citizens and our passengers for the disruption and distress caused and we stand practically by the side of the injured,” the joint announcement concludes.
