Following a series of revelations regarding suspicious infant deaths, the files of the forensic service in Patras are now under police scrutiny. It should be noted that in the latest case involving a 2.5-month-old baby in 2013, despite the fact that it bore signs of abuse, the cause of death recorded by the forensic examiner was meningoencephalitis. “My client categorically denies that the child was beaten,” noted the mother’s lawyer regarding the case.
Case file review underway at forensic service – Reports of €500 “tariff”
It is noted that checks already conducted at the Patras forensic service have revealed that important documents, particularly the forensic examination certification, are missing from the files, according to information broadcast this morning on a “Mega” TV program. Meanwhile, on Wednesday (10/09) the “dismantling” of the Patras Forensic Service was completed, with the last forensic examiner as well as an administrative official being suspended, according to the same source. It is emphasized that the raid by Justice Ministry officials at the Patras forensic service took place on Tuesday (09/09), in order to retrieve case files concerning deaths from recent years that were attributed to natural causes. However, the cases do not concern only forensic examiner Mr. Gotsis but also others, as other scenarios are being examined that speak of a €500 “tariff.” Additionally, the case of the mysterious death of Eirini Lagoudi in Messolongi is being reopened.
“We too are searching to find how this child was struck”
“I don’t have a clear picture of whether the child was beaten,” stated Konstantinos Trambas, the lawyer for the mother of the 2.5-month-old infant who died in 2013, on a “Mega” TV program. “The part that has to do with the domestic violence by the former husband against my client, who has gone his own way, some decisions have been issued, others have become final so we’re done there. The issue that has arisen is about a court case that took place some years ago – I hadn’t handled this case myself and we’re already following it – and it has to do with a forensic report. It appeared in a Mixed Jury Court where at such a level of courts many things are evaluated and obviously this court evaluated some other things and acquitted these people,” he said initially.
“This matter that has to do with the attack on the child is something that at least my client denies. And we too are searching to find how this child was struck. For then, I don’t have a picture of whether the child was beaten but here’s the thing: the main issue of this case is when we get the case records in the coming days and we see what has been submitted there. We will find the thread’s end. My client categorically denies that the child was beaten. She doesn’t explain the bruises, she hadn’t realized that the child had bruises,” Mr. Trambas continued.
