The deadline for issuing new ID cards is approaching, as every citizen who has not proceeded with the replacement has less than twelve months available. Old ID cards will permanently lose their validity on August 3, 2026, according to current regulations for the mandatory transition.

The new identification documents feature advanced digital technology and incorporate a machine-readable zone (MRZ), aiming to harmonize with European security standards. However, despite the mandatory nature of the process, the financial burden falls exclusively on the citizen.
Detailed cost breakdown for new ID cards
Issuing a new ID card involves specific expenses that every citizen must cover before visiting the competent police station.
The basic electronic fee amounts to 10 euros (Type 4485) and covers the document body, printing costs, personalization and secure distribution. Large families enjoy a reduced fee of 5 euros (Type 4486), provided they present the necessary supporting document.
Additionally, a police stamp worth 0.50 euros (Type 2043) is required to be affixed to the application. All payments for e-fees must be completed before visiting the service.
New appointment scheduling system
The introduction of the Personal Number, with an extension until November for selecting the first digits, is expected to boost demand for new ID cards. The Ministry of Digital Governance is launching a renewed appointment platform that, as Minister Dimitris Papastergiou emphasizes, will simplify the process for every citizen.
The initiative aims to decongest police services facing a shortage of available appointments.
