From August 3, 2026, old identity cards will cease to be valid, so those who haven’t already done so must rush to obtain new identity cards. The new identity cards are digitally upgraded, feature a machine readable zone (MRZ) and apply to all citizens belonging to European Union member countries.

The new appointment system for issuing new identity cards
With the establishment of the Personal Number, which has been extended until November for those who want to choose the first digits, demand for identity card issuance is expected to increase.
The Ministry of Digital Governance is implementing a new appointment system which, according to Minister Dimitris Papastergiou, will facilitate citizens.
The ministry’s goal is also to decongest police stations where there are no available appointments to serve citizens.

The detailed procedure for scheduling an appointment for new identity cards:
The citizen selects in their application an Issuing Authority based on their permanent or temporary residence address in Greece, a specific date and time from the availability list, in order to be served in person. Their details are automatically drawn from the Citizens Registry and the National Communication Registry (NCR).
If they don’t have updated details in the NCR, they must either update them on site or complete them by declaration.
Upon completion of the application submission, they receive an email with basic information for processing the appointment, as well as contact details of the selected Issuing Authority.
The appointment scheduling request can be rescheduled, cancelled, or resubmitted no later than one (1) hour before the start of the scheduled appointment.
At various intervals before the scheduled appointment begins, the interested party receives reminder messages from the platform to the email they have declared.
In case of loss or theft of the Police Identity Card, the citizen must contact the competent Issuing Authority by phone, based on their permanent or temporary residence address in Greece, and request an appointment by phone for issuing a new Identity Card.
