The 17-year-old who shocked the public with the abduction of two infants, one in Piraeus and one in Omonia, is now in custody, while the case reveals aspects of his personal condition. The minor, according to his father, had been diagnosed with a neurodevelopmental disorder and had limited supervision from specialists. His actions, as well as the circumstances surrounding them, raise questions about how to handle his case. Police correspondent Vassilis Lambropoulos reported the details.
The minor was arrested by police as he is believed to be the same person who took a baby from Piraeus and abandoned it in a stroller near the Acropolis. The same individual, last May, had abducted an infant from a supermarket in Omonia, which was later found in Alimos next to a garbage bin.
According to testimonies, the 17-year-old also presented himself as a “ticket inspector” on buses, while he allegedly claimed he committed these acts because, as he said, he “can’t stand Roma people” and wanted to show that they don’t take care of their children.
According to his father, the young man had been diagnosed four years ago with a neurodevelopmental disorder. As he explained to authorities, the diagnosis was delayed because he had not recognized the symptoms early enough.
He emphasized that the 17-year-old had seen a psychologist, although not with the frequency that was required, while he used to spend many hours on buses, near the drivers.
