The police officer who allegedly served as an informant for the Crete mafia network has been released after his testimony, subject to restrictive conditions. The officer, as has been revealed, met with specific members of the “49” gang at predetermined locations. According to surveillance reports, he received “all self-protection and counter-surveillance measures” from his “clean” colleagues, in stark contrast to how the other defendants operated. The gang members apparently felt invulnerable and weren’t afraid to openly discuss drug transactions even over the phone without code words or circumlocution.
The uniformed officer who caught his colleagues’ attention was the active-duty police officer. Beyond him, there were two other uniformed personnel – two officials from the Navy and Air Force who, due to debts, were stealing fuel from their units’ tanks and delivering it to the gang. However, this particular police officer was the one who, instead of fighting crime, had crossed to the other side.
