Mr. Djuro Macut, Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia and Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Belgrade, visited the University of Athens on Monday, June 23, 2025, where he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Medical School of the University of Athens.
University of Athens: The honorary doctorate conferment to Djuro Macut
The conferment of the honorary doctorate to Mr. Macut highlights his dual influence: in clinical research and public governance. The ceremony symbolizes the close relationship between the University of Athens and leading scientists of international stature, strengthening Greece-Serbia relations in medical education and research.





The opening address was delivered by the Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Professor Gerasimos Siasos.

The presentation of the honoree’s work and personality was made by Professor of Endocrinology, Georgios Mastorakos.

The honorary conferment ceremony followed:
The reading of the Department Resolution, the Conferment, and the Doctoral Diploma was performed by the Dean of the Medical School, Professor Nikolaos Arkadopoulos.

The investiture of the honoree with the School of Health Sciences robe was performed by the Dean of the School, Professor Pagona Lagiou.
This was followed by a speech from the honored Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia, Professor Djuro Macut
The Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Professor Gerasimos Siasos, emphasized in his address: “Professor Macut belongs to that generation of scientists who, through their long-term and multidimensional work, have substantially shaped modern endocrinology. His career harmoniously combines clinical practice, research innovation, educational contribution, and international scientific networking.
A graduate of the Medical School of the University of Belgrade, he continued his studies and specializations in Serbia and at leading European centers, including Bologna, Geneva, Uppsala, and Oxford, developing research interests focused on female reproduction, polycystic ovary syndrome, metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, and endocrine oncology.
Throughout his long academic career, the honoree has held pivotal leadership positions at the University of Belgrade and the University Clinical Center of Serbia, while simultaneously directing a series of research projects, contributing decisively to the advancement of clinical endocrinology and female reproduction.
As an active member of the European Society of Endocrinology, he has contributed decisively to shaping endocrinological research and practice at the international level. With over 140 publications in prestigious international journals and participation in numerous research projects, Professor Macut has become a reference point in international endocrinological research and has received significant distinctions.
For the honoree, developing research and educational collaborations in the Balkan countries and subsequently throughout Europe has been a priority“.
