Authorities proceeded with the arrest of a 48-year-old permanent employee of the municipality of Pallene, as he is allegedly responsible for four fires in June and August, in areas located close to sensitive facilities in the region.
The operation was carried out with a warrant from the Regular Investigator of the 3rd Department of the Athens Court of First Instance, following a months-long investigation by the Arson Crime Response Directorate (DAEE), which had begun two months ago. The case file had already been sent to the Athens Criminal Prosecution Office, which issued the relevant warrant.
The accused faces charges of intentional arson by continuation, in close proximity to forested areas.
The fires broke out on June 18 and 19, as well as on July 14, 2025, within a radius of approximately 200 meters, near the Pallene Music Gymnasium, the Pallene Center for People with Disabilities (KDAP AmeA), and the mental health facility for minors and adolescents (Ko.Ke.Psy.Y.P.E.).
The modus operandi of the permanent Pallene municipality employee
The investigation revealed that the four arson attacks had common characteristics. The fires broke out in the afternoon hours, between 3:58 PM and 7:17 PM, in unfenced or fenced vacant lots.
The perpetrator moved around in a white van-type vehicle, which was particularly distinctive, and set fire to dry grass either with a lighter or by throwing flaming objects, such as paper or fabric.
