The Assumption of the Virgin Mary is being honored today, on Assumption Day with magnificence throughout the country, centered on Tinos and the Holy Church of the Annunciation, where thousands of faithful from Greece and abroad are flocking to venerate.
Assumption Day: thousands of faithful venerate the icon of the Virgin Mary in Tinos
The church of the Virgin Mary of Tinos is decorated with flags and offerings, while faithful crawl on their knees up Megalocharis Avenue fulfilling the vows they have made. The celebrations will culminate with the procession of the Virgin Mary’s icon through the streets of the island, while the prime minister and government will be represented at the events by Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias.
Double “celebration”
In Tinos, today is twice as significant, as those who were lost are also honored, when the Italians torpedoed and sank the cruiser “Elli” in the harbor on the Virgin Mary’s feast day.
It should be noted that on the island, the celebration of the Virgin Mary was established by Royal Decree of 1836 to be eight days long and last until the “nine days of the Mother of God,” on August 23, when hymns and encomiums are chanted in an atmosphere of emotion, before the epitaph and the icon.
Traffic regulation measures
By decision of the Port Authority of Tinos, according to ERT, temporary traffic regulation measures have been put in place in the land zone of Tinos port.
The Mayor of Tinos, Panagiotis Krontiras, in his message states among other things: “This year, as the heart of Greece beats in Tinos, let us unite our prayers for those who are suffering from the devastating fires that are striking our country. The last few days have been particularly difficult for our homeland and our thoughts are with all our fellow citizens who are affected, with people who are losing their property and with those who are fighting with self-sacrifice, the firefighters, volunteers and citizens, for the extinguishing of the fire fronts.”
