Athens’ coastal zone is experiencing a historic renaissance as the ambitious Poseidonos Avenue underground tunnel project progresses at impressive rates. New aerial footage reveals the dramatic advancement of this underground passage that will redefine Athens’ coastline. The Poseidonos Avenue underground tunnel spans 1,300 meters, connecting Alimos beach with Agios Kosmas Marina. This colossal project serves as the cornerstone of the capital’s coastal zone redevelopment plan.
The modern underground passage will feature six traffic lanes, three in each direction, with a permitted speed limit of 70 kilometers per hour. The project will eliminate six traffic lights that currently create serious traffic problems on the coastal road.
Poseidonos Avenue underground project: Timeline and construction progress
According to Odysseas Athanassiou, managing director of Lamda Development, construction of the underground tunnel will be completed by the end of 2026. However, final delivery for public use is postponed to 2028, due to necessary tram line relocation works scheduled for late 2027.
Construction work proceeds according to schedule, with impressive progress statistics:
• Over 85% of excavations have been completed
• 80% of concrete work has been accomplished
• Of the 530,000 cubic meters of soil, over 445,000 have been removed
The new face of coastal Athens
The Poseidonos Avenue underground project is part of the broader Elliniko development plan. Alongside the underground passage, new landmarks are emerging in the coastal zone, with the most iconic being the Riviera Tower rising to 113 meters.
This transformation is captured in an impressive video published by the GeorgeFoxCinematography account. The aerial shots of the underground construction work begin at the 03:50 timestamp and document the current state of the project.
