The victim was a 60-year-old man who, according to information from zarpanews.gr, had to be carried by hand by forest service workers for two hours over seven kilometers with the injured hiker and oxygen tank, in order to reach the helipad from the 4.5 km point where the accident occurred.

Specifically, 11 forest service personnel -including two doctors- and one firefighter from Agia Roumeli undertook the transport of the injured man -as shown in the zarpanews.gr photographs- who is a well-known hiker and member of the mountaineering club that located the missing German hiker last winter.
The rescue operation had a successful outcome thanks to the immediate mobilization of services, while according to the fire department announcement, 10 firefighters from the 3rd EMAK and 19th EMODE units arrived at the gorge, along with personnel from the Anopolis fire station, while helicopter assistance was requested due to the 60-year-old’s condition for his transport.
The injured man was picked up by helicopter from the forest helipad and transported to Chania General Hospital with rib fractures and chest injuries.
