Passed away on the evening of Thursday, August 7, the Metropolitan of Corinth Dionysios at the age of 73, plunging the local community into mourning. The blessed Hierarch passed away after a long and painful battle with cancer, which he endured with exemplary patience and spiritual strength. His health condition deteriorated in recent months, despite medical efforts in Greece and abroad. His ministry in Corinthia was characterized by intense philanthropic action, support for youth and families, establishment of institutions, rich catechetical work, and vigorous intervention in the social and spiritual issues of the region.
The funeral service will be held at the Holy Cathedral of the Apostle Paul in Corinth, in the presence of Hierarchs of the Church of Greece, the Holy Clergy, local authorities, and a multitude of faithful.
Who was Metropolitan of Corinthia Dionysios
The blessed metropolitan was born in Athens (N. Psychiko) in 1952 and was a graduate of the Theological School of Athens. After his studies, he attended courses in the Postgraduate Department of the University of Thessaloniki (Christian Philosophy, Pedagogy).
He was ordained Deacon in 1974 and Priest in 1979. He served as Preacher (1977), General Episcopal Commissioner (1978), and First Syncellus (1990) of the Holy Metropolis of Chalcis, as Deputy General Director of Apostolic Diakonia (2002), and as Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod (2006). He served as head of Youth and Catechetical Schools and Director of the Boarding School of the Holy Metropolis of Chalcis.
He was also responsible for creating 25 Spiritual Centers and modern Camps in Ilia, Evia in the same Metropolis. He organized and operated Training Schools for Personnel (Catechists, Camp Leaders, Anti-Heretical Struggle). He served as President of the Board of Directors of the “Drug Prevention Center” of Evia Prefecture. He developed rich activity with writings, articles, lectures, participation in conferences, and many radio and television programs of theological, social, and national content.
He was ordained Metropolitan of Corinth on October 15, 2006.
