New evidence emerges regarding the ferry that ran aground off Nea Styra. According to information broadcast by ERT, while the captain claimed he couldn’t avoid running aground due to steering failure, the marine surveyor reported that no such issue was found.
It should be noted that the 62-year-old captain, who remains in custody until Friday, allegedly claimed during his testimony that he couldn’t avoid running aground, adding that the steering got stuck.
Meanwhile, the process of refloating and towing the vessel will begin early this afternoon, provided nothing emerges that contradicts safety protocols, as the plan submitted by the company has been approved. All preparatory actions have been completed on the ferry both inside the vessel and with divers.
According to updates from the ministry, preparatory actions have already been completed inside the vessel to facilitate inspection procedures. It’s noted that divers who operated to examine the extent of the damage discovered a crack nearly 20 meters long in the ferry.
Meanwhile, the ordeal continues for many passengers, as their vehicles remain on board the ship.
