“With deep sorrow we learned of the tragic loss of Dimitris Kadas, who lost his life during the descent on the Mont Blanc massif in France. The Mountaineering Club of Patras expresses its heartfelt condolences to his family. We will always remember him with appreciation and respect. Safe journey, Dimitris,” the statement emphasized.
According to reports, the 33-year-old alpinist lost his life on Monday (August 4) on the Mont Blanc massif, in the Haute-Savoie region of France, when during his descent he lost his balance and fell into the void at an altitude of 3,835 meters.
The corridor of death
A Star report notes that the location of the Greek climber’s fall, in the upper section of the Goûter corridor, is considered one of the most dangerous points on the classic route to the Mont Blanc summit. As the television station reports, the Goûter corridor, which they also call the “corridor of death,” is known for its danger, mainly due to rockfalls that occur almost daily during the summer months.
French authorities announced that the 33-year-old climber had a heavy backpack and was descending alone and without a rope, an element that may have contributed to his fall, according to “Liberation.” The PGHM reports that the tragic accident was likely caused by a combination of factors such as fatigue, momentary loss of concentration, or the weight of equipment.
It is noted that Dimitris’s body was repatriated to Greece, while an investigation by French authorities into the exact circumstances of the accident is ongoing.
