The forensic pathologist announced his findings after completing the autopsy on the body of the 11-year-old girl who was swept away with an inflatable and drowned in Rodopi. Drowning in water is the cause of death of the 11-year-old girl from the village of Siderades in the Municipality of Komotini, who on Friday afternoon was swept away in the sea area of Imeros beach in the Municipality of Maroneia-Sapes, according to the findings of the Head of the Forensic Medicine Service of Thrace, Nikolaos Kifnidis, who today completed the autopsy on the child’s body.
Rodopi: The 11-year-old had consumed food before entering the water
Mr. Kifnidis spoke of “classic forensic findings that support drowning in water” when speaking to ERT Komotini, adding that he also found food remnants in the girl’s stomach, an element that suggests food consumption before entering the water, but not in quantities that would be responsible for the tragic outcome.
It should be noted that, as highlighted in an announcement by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Island Policy, several people were arrested: the girl’s sister (for violating the criminal code article regarding endangering a person) as well as a 43-year-old seasonal speedboat operator, a 47-year-old municipal employee, and a 27-year-old seasonal lifeguard, for failure to provide assistance.
The minor had been swept far from shore and when she was located, she was wearing an inflatable life jacket. A family member had notified the port authorities and a search operation began. An immediate operation was launched to locate her by the Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Center (EKSED), involving two Coast Guard vessels, a helicopter, and private boats. The girl was pulled unconscious from the sea and transported to the port of Maroneia where EKAB rescuers performed CPR until her transfer to Komotini General Hospital. There, doctors were unable to bring her back to life despite their tremendous efforts.
