August has begun with mild weather conditions, however all signs point to it following the “pattern” of recent years with higher than normal temperatures and intense weather phenomena. According to meteology.gr, this year’s August is expected to be exceptionally hot, with temperatures that will far exceed average climate values.
August weather: Mild start with local thunderstorms
According to the latest available data, the month begins with temperatures close to normal seasonal averages, accompanied by local episodes of instability. Particularly in the early days of August, strong thunderstorms are not ruled out, which may leave significant rainfall amounts. This scenario will help maintain temperatures at normal levels, without extreme deviations.
Imminent heatwave in western Europe – Hot front heading toward Greece
However, this cooler period does not appear to have a long duration. As meteology.gr emphasizes, from the end of the first ten days of August, a strong heatwave is expected to hit western Europe – with Spain, France and Italy at the epicenter. The hot air masses will likely extend to central Europe as well.
Although the Etesian winds in the eastern Mediterranean will act as a shield for Greece in the initial phases of the phenomenon, western and northern mainland areas will begin to feel the impact of the heat, with temperatures rising to levels characterized as “unpleasantly high”.
Weather on August 15th
The peak of the hot period is expected to occur around August 15th, when – according to forecast data – the hot front will have covered most of the Mediterranean, including Greece. Everything points to this period being accompanied either by a new, strong heatwave or by an extended period of intense heat. It’s not ruled out that temperatures may reach or exceed 45 degrees Celsius, with consequences for daily life and citizens’ health.
Thunderstorms in the north toward month’s end
Although the hot period appears to extend until the end of August, there are indications that – unlike July – temporary weather changes are not ruled out, especially in northern Greece. Meteology.gr reports that there are increased chances for passages of minor disturbances that could trigger strong thunderstorms or downpours in areas of Macedonia and Thrace. Generally, this year’s August – as everything indicates – will be recorded as warmer than average, continuing the trend of recent years. In terms of rainfall, the first days of the month may approach or exceed the – already low – average levels, mainly due to thunderstorms in northern areas. The main characteristic of the month, according to meteology.gr, will be the intense heatwave around mid-August and the possibly strong instability phenomena that may follow. Weather developments remain under continuous monitoring, as small modifications in meteorological models may significantly alter the scenario.
