An alarm was raised in the early hours of Monday, October 5, on Acharnon Avenue in Athens, when two individuals riding a motorcycle threw a grenade-like object outside a coffee shop.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred at approximately 4:30 AM, when the motorcycle — carrying two people — passed by the establishment and the riders hurled the suspicious object, which bore the appearance of a hand grenade.
Police forces rushed to the scene, and a unit from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was called in to examine the object and determine whether it was an actual grenade or something else entirely.
As a result of the ongoing operation, the Hellenic Police (ELAS) implemented traffic restrictions across the wider area.
According to the latest update, traffic has been halted on Iulianou Street from the intersection with Aristotelous Street, as well as on Acharnon Avenue from the Epirus Street junction through to Heyden Street.
Earlier, traffic closures had also been announced on Acharnon Avenue from Iulianou Street to Heyden Street, and on Feron Street from the Fylis Street intersection.
The area remains cordoned off as the EOD team continues its examination of the suspicious object.
