Severe weather conditions are expected in Greece over the coming days, with Crete and Evia at the center of the storm. Meteorologist Georgios Tsatrafyllias is issuing a stark warning about exceptionally heavy rainfall. “If these scenarios are confirmed, some areas could receive rainfall equal to two or more ‘Octobers’ within just a few days,” he emphasized regarding the weather forecast.

Tsatrafyllias’ weather warning post
“Extreme rainfall levels in Evia and Crete. Increased risk of flooding.” The two main meteorological models, ECMWF and ICON, continue to predict extreme rainfall levels through Sunday in Evia and especially Crete. The maps below show local amounts in Evia approaching or exceeding 100mm, while in Crete there are pockets of 250–350mm and locally even higher totals.
If these scenarios are confirmed, some areas could see rainfall equivalent to two or more full months of October falling within just a few days. In Evia, due to its rugged terrain, such multi-day accumulations require particular caution. Should a large portion of this rainfall occur within a short timeframe, the risk of flash flooding and swollen torrents increases significantly.
For Crete — particularly in Chania and Rethymno — forecast models are predicting extreme rainfall totals over just a few days, significantly raising the risk of flood events in those areas as well. The exact peak values, however, should not yet be taken as certain, as this is still a several-days-out forecast.
Crete region placed on red code alert
It is worth noting that the Region of Crete was placed on a heightened “Red Code” emergency footing starting Wednesday (30/09), as state emergency mechanisms prepare for the onset of locally intense rainfall and thunderstorms expected to impact the island through Sunday.
