As a result, the operation to locate — and, fingers crossed, rescue the six missing civilians — is progressing at an agonizingly slow pace, with hours having passed since the explosion and teams still unable to enter the main section of the building, which was completely destroyed.
Explosion in Plaka: Two elderly residents and two young couples sought in the rubble
Information gathered so far by authorities points to six people who may have been inside the building at the time of the explosion. On the first floor, there was a short-term rental apartment where two young tourist couples, who had traveled to Greece on holiday, are believed to have been staying. Their whereabouts remain unknown.
Anguish over the fate of an elderly couple
According to information gathered so far, the second floor of the building was home to an elderly couple: a 77-year-old woman and a 78-year-old man. Repeated attempts to reach them by phone in the hours following the explosion have gone unanswered.
The ground-floor owner also expressed deep concern over their fate, stating he had tried to contact them since early morning. He noted that the landline was not working, while the mobile phone appeared to be switched off. He also mentioned that the 78-year-old man had mobility issues.
