Shocking eyewitness accounts have emerged on parapolitika.gr from people who were at the scene of a powerful explosion that occurred on Friday morning (25/9) on Lysikratous Street in Plaka, in the heart of Athens. Reports indicate that a loud “bang” was heard, followed by the partial collapse of an old two-story building, with fire department units, police, and EKAB ambulances rushing to the scene.

Women who were cleaning in an adjacent building spoke to journalist Anna Emmei from parapolitika.gr about what they experienced. As one of them recounted: “While we were cleaning, we heard the explosion. I saw the building collapsing from the back — all the windows in the neighboring houses shattered. Then the fire department arrived and called us outside. No one got hurt.” She continued: “Our building was fine. We threw out the rubbish and waited outside.”
When the journalist asked: “Did you see people coming out from inside? Did you know there were people in there?”, one of the witnesses replied: “The side I could see was the back. I don’t know about the other side, because the Airbnb — or hotel, or whatever it was — was on the other side. I didn’t see anything else. Everything was fine.”
As for whether there had been any smell beforehand, the witness answered: “Even when we went back in, there was a smell. It wasn’t there before, but when we went back in to get our things, it smelled like fire — a very strong smell.” It is worth noting that the explosion was likely caused by a natural gas leak.
“We rushed outside, we were terrified…”
Given the sudden nature of the incident, the shock and panic among those nearby was entirely expected. As one witness described: “We rushed outside, we were terrified, we dropped everything. But we’re okay — we made it out, no one was hurt on our end. There were two or three casualties next door, that’s it.”
The witnesses also described the deafening noise of the blast: “It was so loud… I don’t even know what to say…” She went on: “They brought out three injured people from the building next door, not from ours. We were right next to it. But guys, we made it — everyone’s okay.”
