An autumnal weather pattern will dominate Greece’s weather this Friday (25/9), with rain and thunderstorms making an appearance, while temperatures are set to drop slightly compared to previous days — with a further deterioration expected over the weekend.
Rain, thunderstorms and a slight temperature drop
Temperatures will range in Western Macedonia from 5 to 23°C, in the rest of Macedonia and Thrace from 3 to 24°C, in Epirus from 6 to 25°C, in Thessaly from 7 to 25°C, in the remaining mainland areas from 6 to 25°C, in Crete from 8 to 24°C, in the Ionian Islands from 13 to 24–25°C, in the Northern and Northeastern Aegean islands from 8 to 22–24°C, and in the remaining Aegean island regions from 12 to 24–25°C.
Winds in the west will be variable at 3–4 Beaufort, while in the east they will blow from northerly directions at 3–5 Beaufort, and in the southeastern Aegean at 5–6 Beaufort. Temperatures will reach 24–26°C across most of the country, with local highs of up to 27°C in the Dodecanese. In Athens, temperatures will range from 15 to 26°C, and in Thessaloniki from 14 to 25°C.
Weather in Athens

Weather in Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki will experience cloudy skies with localised rain, mainly during the evening hours. Winds will blow from various directions at up to 2–3 Beaufort. Temperatures will range from 17 to 24°C.
Further deterioration over the weekend: which regions are most at risk (Video)
The weekend is set to be dominated by an intense autumnal weather pattern across large parts of Greece, according to the latest meteorological forecast from Sakis Arnautoglou.
Atmospheric instability will begin to make itself felt from Friday midday, with the first rainfall developing over western and northwestern Greece. The low-pressure system will gradually shift eastward, affecting more regions overnight into Saturday.
In the early hours of Saturday, 26 September, according to Sakis Arnautoglou’s analysis, conditions will intensify over central Greece and the Peloponnese. Thunderstorms will be locally severe, and as the day progresses, instability will spread across a larger portion of the country.
During the morning hours on Saturday, rain will affect mainly the Ionian Islands, the Peloponnese and parts of central Greece. The band of weather activity will cover the wider areas of Lamia and Volos, with locally intense conditions. As the day advances, the system will push eastward and is expected to reach Attica by the afternoon. However, the exact intensity and duration of rainfall in each region cannot be determined with absolute certainty at this stage of the forecast.
Heightened vigilance will be required from Saturday evening in northeastern Evia and the Sporades, where there are clear indications of more significant weather events. This deterioration had already been flagged in earlier analyses, which pointed to a low-pressure system developing over the Ionian region, with an increased likelihood of severe thunderstorms towards the end of September.
Atmospheric instability will persist into Sunday, 27 September, with rain continuing to affect parts of eastern and southern Greece. The areas most likely to remain in the eye of the storm will be Evia, the Cyclades and Crete, where unsettled conditions will persist for a longer period.
In contrast, other parts of the country will see a gradual improvement in conditions. The broader meteorological trend suggests that September is drawing to a close with distinctly autumnal characteristics, following an extended period of above-average temperatures for the season.
