The 58-year-old pathologist’s lawyer is considering filing a request for release with an electronic ankle bracelet — the same doctor whose secretary claimed he was asleep during the plasmapheresis procedure performed on Giorgos Mazonakis by his 56-year-old wife. According to Star’s reporting, the request would apply only to Ilias Theodoropoulos and not to Ioanna Gaka. Based on available information, the doctor is being held in isolation in Wing Z of Korydallos Prison, where no one is permitted to approach him. He moves around the facility under guard, though he is reportedly staying informed about developments by watching a great deal of television and reading. According to the same sources, the doctor appears calmer — considerably more so than his wife, who continues to face taunting from fellow inmates, who reportedly keep playing Mazonakis songs to provoke her. Of course, once the confidentiality restrictions are lifted and the results of the toxicological and histological examinations are released, they are expected to determine much of the fate of both doctors.
Giorgos Mazonakis death: A fatal mistake?
The plasmapheresis procedure — which allegedly proved fatal for Giorgos Mazonakis — continues to raise serious questions. One of them is whether the 56-year-old doctor allowed three days to pass between the hydrotherapy session and the plasmapheresis. Mazonakis is said to have had reservations about undergoing plasmapheresis, which is why the hypnotherapist — introduced to the 54-year-old singer by the doctor’s associate — allegedly sent a message to the doctor saying, “Leave it, I’ll sort him out.” It was reportedly this same individual who persuaded Mazonakis that cleansing his body was an urgent necessity. It is also noted that he was a collaborator of both doctors. Mazonakis was reportedly seeking help for what may have been personal and psychological struggles he was going through at the time. Furthermore, the hypnotherapist’s message appears to have been one of a series of exchanges between him and the two doctors.
Star’s main evening news bulletin also reported that the hypnotherapist and the two remanded doctors signed a contract on September 4, 2025. The agreement was described as an interdisciplinary collaboration contract, in which the hypnotherapist is listed as a collaborating consultant. It was also clarified that he does not share the premises — he simply conducts his appointments at the Patriarchou Ioakeim clinic. Mr. Komianos is reportedly set to receive €40 per patient treated. However, the hypnotherapist does not issue invoices for this service himself. Patients and clients are billed exclusively by the doctors.
The secretary’s contradictions
The doctors’ secretary allegedly contradicted herself during the preliminary investigation, as reported by Star. She gave two separate statements. In them, she claimed: “Mazonakis arrived at the clinic at 3:30 PM.” Yet surveillance footage and witness testimony indicate he actually arrived at 2:00 PM. She also stated that the remanded pathologist was in his office at the time, and that she personally called the ambulance service (EKAB) from both a landline and a mobile phone — and that when paramedics took Mazonakis away, she saw that he was still alive. This claim is categorically contradicted by all available evidence.
The same witness reportedly attempted to exonerate the remanded pathologist by portraying him as having been asleep at the time of the incident involving Giorgos Mazonakis: “The doctor was sleeping on the couch at 3:30 PM. He had a patient appointment scheduled. He was informed about Mazonakis at 4:10 PM.” The secretary from the Karneadou clinic was accompanied by the lawyer representing the remanded couple, Mr. Agapinos, who claimed that the witness came forward to testify at the defense’s request. The investigation remains ongoing and further charges cannot be ruled out.
