A significant weather change took place today (22/9), with heavy rainfall recorded across several regions, as meteorologist Sakis Arnaoytoglou broke down how conditions will evolve over the coming days. According to his analysis, the weather system currently affecting the country is moving eastward, toward Turkey. Overnight and into the early morning hours, showers are expected across the eastern parts of Central Greece and Thessaly, as well as the northern and eastern Aegean. By midday, the instability will shift toward Crete, while the rest of the country faces very low chances of heavy rain. Athens and the wider Attica region are expected to see a similar picture.
At the same time, cold northerly winds will dominate the Ionian and Aegean seas, reaching wind strengths of 6 to 7 Beaufort. Temperatures will drop further, and in parts of central and northern Greece, readings could approach freezing point. As Arnaoytoglou noted, the minimum temperatures of 22°C that were common throughout summer have now effectively become the maximum.
Sakis Arnaoytoglou: Weather outlook from Thursday through Sunday
Thursday is expected to bring fair weather, while Friday will see conditions deteriorate again from the morning, mainly across Western and Northwestern Greece. During Friday night into Saturday, some rainfall is expected, particularly over the Peloponnese. Athens may experience considerable cloud cover on Saturday with a chance of isolated showers, though nothing significant is anticipated. From Saturday evening into Sunday, the system will begin to break apart. Sunday will bring some rain, but conditions are expected to weaken by the afternoon.
As we move toward the end of the month and into the beginning of the next, weather conditions will gradually improve. October will arrive without rain, Arnaoytoglou stated. In the early days of October, warm air masses could push temperatures even higher.
