A violent altercation at Vouliagmeni Beach on Sunday morning (20/9) ended in tragedy, with an 82-year-old man pronounced dead upon arrival at Asklepieion Hospital in Voula. According to reports, the incident allegedly began over a sunbed dispute — despite the fact that other sunbeds were reportedly available at the beach at the time.
An ambulance and EKAB motorcycle unit rushed to the scene
Following the altercation and the injury of the 82-year-old man, an ambulance and a motorcycle unit from EKAB (Greece’s National Emergency Medical Service) rushed to the scene, according to parapolitika.gr. Paramedics found the elderly man had already suffered a cardiac arrest and immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). He was subsequently transferred to Asklepieion Hospital in Voula, where he was pronounced dead despite the efforts of the medical team.
The 82-year-old was declared dead on arrival at the hospital
According to reports, the 82-year-old arrived at the hospital unconscious and was declared dead on arrival. As parapolitika.gr reports, although underlying medical conditions may have been a contributing factor, the exact cause of death remains unclear at this stage, particularly given the beating he sustained prior to his collapse. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the precise cause of death and to establish whether it is linked to the injuries he suffered during the assault. The findings of the forensic examination are expected to shed light on the exact circumstances surrounding the elderly man’s death.
How a sunbed dispute spiraled into a fatal assault
The violent incident took place at 8:50 a.m. on Sunday (20/09) at Vouliagmeni Beach, when two elderly men initially exchanged heated words before the situation rapidly escalated into a fatal confrontation.
Specifically, the 82-year-old became embroiled in an argument with a 76-year-old man. The two men reportedly exchanged heated words at first, but the situation quickly got out of hand and turned physical. A 21-year-old woman, who was accompanying the 76-year-old, also became involved in the incident. According to witnesses, the 82-year-old was struck repeatedly and with significant force, causing him to collapse and lose consciousness.
The 76-year-old man and the 21-year-old woman are currently being held at the Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni Police Department. Once the case file is complete, they are expected to be brought before the relevant judicial authorities. The manager of the beach bar was also taken in for questioning.
Meanwhile, police officers are collecting witness statements and gathering evidence in order to fully clarify the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident. The forensic findings regarding the exact cause of the 82-year-old man’s death are also expected to prove critical to the investigation.
