Following the lengthy testimonies of the two defendants and the decision by the investigating magistrate and prosecutor to remand them in custody, the investigation is expected to continue with the examination of key witnesses, the analysis of digital evidence, and the processing of telephone data. Additionally, significant information is expected to emerge from the results of histological and toxicological examinations, which could shed further light on the cause and mechanism of death.
These tests are expected to answer questions relating, among other things, to the condition of the singer’s body and any possible connection between the findings and the medical procedure he had undergone. The lifting of telephone confidentiality is also under scrutiny. Data retrieved from phone communications could help reconstruct the critical minutes before and after the incident, recording calls, timestamps and contacts that may be of investigative interest.
Witness testimonies from the clinic and the plasmapheresis procedure
At the same time, particular weight is expected to be placed on the circle of witnesses who will be called to testify before the investigating magistrate. As part of the investigation, individuals who had previously visited the Karneadou Street clinic and had undergone similar treatment may be examined, should the magistrate deem it necessary. If it emerges that they had undergone the plasmapheresis procedure, they may be called upon to describe their own experience — what process was followed, whether they encountered any problems or complications, what their health condition was before and after the treatment, and whether any additional medical intervention was required. They could, however, help judicial authorities determine whether the procedure carried out in Giorgos Mazonakis’s case was an isolated incident, or whether there was a specific standard protocol applied to other patients as well.
The forensic dimension and key questions about the cause of death
The forensic aspect of the case remains critical. So far, it has not been established that plasmapheresis was the cause of the singer’s death. According to the prosecutorial order, the actions taken by the Athens Medical Association are now under scrutiny, while evidence is being examined suggesting that, as far back as 2023, a plasmapheresis machine was being promoted at medical conferences.
Additionally, investigators are seeking to determine whether, over the past five years — either following complaints or on the authority’s own initiative — the Athens Medical Association and other competent bodies had carried out the legally required compliance inspections at centers offering modern regenerative therapies.
In this context, prosecutors are being called upon to examine whether there were cases in which practices applied at such centers may have endangered patients’ health, or whether there were instances of patients being misled for financial gain.
The judicial investigation now operating on three levels
The case is now unfolding across three parallel tracks. The main criminal investigation seeks to reconstruct, minute by minute, the circumstances under which Giorgos Mazonakis collapsed and ultimately lost his life, while the new prosecutorial inquiry extends to the question of inspections, the operation of the clinic, and the oversight of the specific therapeutic practices involved.
The coming weeks are expected to be decisive. Witness testimonies, histological and toxicological test results, phone record data, digital evidence, and findings from regulatory audits will all form the next pieces of the puzzle that justice is now tasked with assembling.
