Authorities continue their investigation into the young girl found dead on Eden beach in Palaio Faliro. The child’s identity remains unknown, as after four days and despite appeals from authorities, no one has come forward looking for her.
Dead girl in Palaio Faliro: Identity still unknown
According to forensic experts, it is estimated that the girl was in the sea for approximately 24 to 48 hours, information that coast guard officials are trying to utilize in their investigation. Yesterday was another day when no phone calls provided any useful information to coast guard personnel. Coast guard divers are participating in the search, while at the same time, authorities are collecting evidence from security cameras in the surrounding area, examining whether there is any video footage that might have captured the girl with a possible companion.
New evidence emerges
A new piece of evidence that has emerged, according to ERTnews, is that the girl may have been slightly older than initial estimates, meaning she is now believed to have been around 4 years old, rather than 3 as initially estimated.
According to the forensic examination, the child died from drowning. The body showed injuries attributed to post-mortem impact with rocks, as the child appears to have remained in the sea for several hours. Authorities are examining all possible scenarios.
As stated to ERTNews by the honorary president of police officers of Southeast Attica, Giorgos Kalliakmanis: “There’s a strong possibility that there was an adult companion who drowned first, followed by the child. Divers have been deployed to see if there are any other findings. Unless it was a criminal act. Because the fact that the coroner said drowning doesn’t mean the child couldn’t have been drowned intentionally. In other words, it could also be a criminal act.”
The timeline
In the early hours of Sunday (27/7), a 33-year-old Egyptian national called 112 reporting that on Eden beach in Palaio Faliro, the body of a child, approximately 2-3 years old, had washed ashore. Immediate Action police officers arrived first at the scene, along with an ambulance from the National Emergency Care Center, which transported the girl to “Agia Sophia” Children’s Hospital, where her death was unfortunately confirmed.
Since then, the process began to handle the girl’s remains. Authorities are searching missing children lists, but so far there have been no results. The preliminary investigation has been transferred to the coast guard, while the Hellenic Police are also being informed about the ongoing actions.
