The touching “thank you” from Kyriaki Griva’s family
Before the final curtain fell, the court accepted the prosecutor’s proposal to forward the trial proceedings to the Prosecutor’s Office so that the 40-year-old could be investigated for violating personal data protection laws regarding GPS surveillance of Kyriaki.
When the presiding judge announced “the session is adjourned,” Kyriaki’s relatives stood up emotionally and expressed their satisfaction by telling the judges “a big thank you” for the entire process.
Life imprisonment for the murderer
The 40-year-old was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Athens Mixed Jury Court after being unanimously found guilty of the murder of Kyriaki Griva, which was committed in April 2024. The court imposed an additional sentence of five years and one month for the misdemeanors of illegal weapons possession, weapons use, and possession and supply of narcotics for personal use, as well as a monetary fine of 1,000 euros.
Kyriaki Griva trial: The father’s emotional outburst
The verdict was announced in a charged atmosphere, with the woman’s parents lashing out at the defendant while the court was deliberating on the sentence. Kyriaki’s father addressed the 40-year-old saying: “Do you see what you accomplished? You made her into a photograph that we see day and night. You saw, Mr. Dimitriou? Your client is insensitive, as if nothing happened. All of Greece is talking about you, you heartless man! You destroyed so many homes…” Continuing, he added: “Tell us what Kiki did to you that made you kill her. Or rather, what she didn’t do to you that made you kill her… Say something, say, come on, say something!”
In the courtroom, the family’s pain peaked when the father played Kyriaki’s recorded conversation with Emergency Services shortly before her death. “Do you hear her?” he said to the defendant. Kyriaki’s mother, visibly shaken, shouted at him: “Stop your act!”
The verdict on the 40-year-old’s guilt
Earlier, the 40-year-old murderer and former partner of the 28-year-old was unanimously found guilty of premeditated homicide in a calm mental state, illegal weapons possession and use, and possession and supply of narcotics for personal use. The court rejected the defendant’s claim of diminished responsibility. The verdict was received with tears from Kyriaki’s family members. The court’s decision was in line with the prosecutor’s recommendation, which had asked for the 40-year-old to be found guilty as charged, emphasizing that he had planned Kyriaki’s murder and executed it with premeditation and organization.
