Shock has gripped the city of Veria following news that an 18-year-old girl was pulled lifeless from the river in the area. The young woman was found unconscious in the pool formed beneath the waterfall in the Makedonida Municipality area, after authorities were alerted on the afternoon of Thursday, August 27th.

The Fire Service Operations Center received the call at approximately 4:15 PM, after a close acquaintance dialed emergency number 112. Twelve firefighters were immediately dispatched in three vehicles from the Makedonida Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Veria Fire Service, while four divers from the Underwater Rescue Team of the 2nd EMAK special rescue unit also rushed to the scene.
The 2nd EMAK divers descended into the pool and located the 18-year-old submerged in the water. A recovery operation followed, after which the young woman was handed over to a EKAV ambulance crew.
The operation was completed on Thursday afternoon. Authorities are currently investigating the exact circumstances under which the 18-year-old ended up in the waterfall pool.
