A major incident caused widespread disruption on Friday afternoon (August 14) near Preveza, following a road accident that occurred close to the underwater tunnel. A truck collided with three private vehicles, injuring eight people — including two children. According to ERT, traffic heading toward the Aktio tunnel had been temporarily suspended after another vehicle had broken down inside it.
As a result, the three private vehicles had come to a standstill at the entrance of the underwater tunnel, waiting for the green light to proceed. Under circumstances currently under investigation by the relevant authorities, an oncoming truck failed to stop in time and slammed into the stationary vehicles with great force. The three cars bore Romanian, Italian, and Greek license plates, while the truck driver is Greek.
How the Preveza road accident unfolded
Fire department crews arrived at the scene immediately and, using specialized cutting equipment — as the vehicles had been literally crushed — cut through the metal and freed those trapped inside. A total of eight people were injured in the crash, among them at least two young children. The injured were transported to hospital for examinations and the necessary medical care.
Injured in stable condition
According to reports, none of the injured are in a life-threatening condition, as they have sustained primarily orthopedic injuries. Strong emergency response teams from the fire department and traffic police rushed to the scene, along with three EKAB ambulances to provide first aid and transport the injured to hospital.
