Porto Germeno now resembles a bombed-out wasteland — a once-thriving source of oxygen and greenery that was violently transformed by a devastating wildfire that swept through the area. The day after the disaster brings with it a sobering, deeply painful reality. The landscape bears no resemblance to the Porto Germeno people once knew. The lush greenery that defined the area has given way to grey desolation, with the heartbreaking sight of burned homes and charred vehicles dominating every view.

The smell of smoke and ash hangs in the air at every turn. The atmosphere is suffocating in an area that has been rendered uninhabitable. Power and water supplies will take considerable time to be restored, adding yet another layer of hardship to an already desperate situation. Residents and vacationers alike are overwhelmed by despair and grief. They cannot fathom how years of effort and memory were erased in an instant. For them, Porto Germeno is bound up with cherished memories — first swims in the sea, games in the garden, and some of life’s most treasured moments.

Some watched their homes disappear before their eyes in an instant, while others returned to find their properties in ruins. The anguish is compounded by seeing the destroyed homes of neighbours — people they spent so many summers alongside, sharing the simple joys of life by the sea.
Residents and vacationers of Porto Germeno are now being forced to face a brutal reality. More and more people are returning to the area now that most road restrictions have been lifted. Anger, despair, and grief are the defining emotions. Meanwhile, crews are working to restore electricity, and Red Cross psychosocial support units have been deployed to the area, where a full damage assessment will gradually get underway.
Among the most harrowing sights is what greets visitors as they descend from Kryο Pigadi toward Porto Germeno: a burned-out fire truck, the charred remains of dead animals, and an endless expanse of grey. Trees reduced to skeletons, all vegetation utterly destroyed.
The hours ahead remain critical — and the scenes unfolding on the ground are beyond words.
