Firefighting forces battling the wildfire in Boeotia face another extremely difficult night as the blaze continues to consume a vast area, with conditions at their worst in Porto Germeno and the surrounding settlements.
Weather forecast and conditions for aerial operations
According to Open TV meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis, winds are not expected to ease overnight. Along the fire front raging out of control in Porto Germeno, northeasterly winds will be blowing with gusts reaching 7 to 8 Beaufort in some areas.
Explaining why helicopters have been able to operate over the past two hours despite such powerful winds, Mr. Marousakis noted that the gusts of 7–8 Beaufort are occurring intermittently and locally, making it safer for aircraft to fly during the calmer intervals.
As for when weather conditions will turn in favor of firefighters, the meteorologist said that from Sunday morning through midday, winds are expected to subside, allowing aircraft to fly and carry out operations more effectively. However, winds will still be fairly strong, ranging between 4 and 5 Beaufort with local gusts reaching 6 Beaufort.
