Messinia: Firefighter and former community president among the three arrested
According to information, among those arrested are a five-year contracted firefighter, a former community president, and the latter’s brother. The three suspects, aged between 45 and 65, are alleged to have acted together. The case involves a total of seven deliberate arson attacks that occurred between 2024 and 2025 in the Local Community of Metamorfosi, Messinia. Specifically, these include three forest fires and four agricultural fires, which — according to preliminary investigation findings — share common characteristics in terms of method of operation, frequency of occurrence, geographic concentration, and manner of ignition.
In addition, the three suspects face charges for other offenses, including extortion, aggravated property damage, and theft, allegedly committed over a period of a decade.
As announced by the Fire Service, the DAEE investigation lasted approximately two years and was carried out in cooperation with investigative officers from the Gargalianoi Fire Station. During the preliminary investigation, extensive evidence was gathered and evaluated, including witness testimonies, incident history records, intelligence material, and findings obtained through specialized investigative procedures.
After the evidence was assessed, the case file was submitted to the competent prosecutorial authority, and three arrest warrants were issued with the approval of both the prosecutor and the examining magistrate. The arrests were carried out on Saturday during house searches, with the assistance of the Messinia Special Suppression Unit (OPKE).
The three suspects were brought before the competent judicial authority.
