Salmonella is sweeping through Lamia, with a significant number of cases reported over the weekend. More than 16 people visited the emergency department of Lamia General Hospital presenting symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting, and fever. According to information from lamiareport.gr, 12 of those affected required hospitalization and remain admitted to a hospital ward and the short-stay unit.
Beyond the cases that presented at the hospital’s emergency department, the LamiaReport investigation indicates that additional cases exist — individuals who received medical guidance from private physicians and are recovering at home.
Sources report that all patients stated they had eaten at different restaurants and food establishments across the city, pointing to a contaminated batch of food — most likely chicken — sourced from a common supplier.
Lamia General Hospital has confirmed the presence of salmonella through laboratory testing and immediately raised the alarm, notifying the National Public Health Organization (EODY). The organization in turn informed the Public Health and Social Welfare Directorate of Fthiotida, which will launch inspections at local food establishments in order to identify the source of the outbreak.
