Dramatic footage aired on Mega’s “Live News” program captures the incredible moment a F-16 pilot calmly walks away from his burning fighter jet following an emergency landing in Zakynthos. According to initial reports, the pilot received a fire warning indicator in the cockpit and successfully executed an emergency landing. The pilot was unharmed. The military aircraft had taken off earlier from the 116th Combat Wing at Araxos.

F-16 emergency landing in Zakynthos: The pilot’s calm response and safe evacuation
The experienced pilot responded with remarkable composure, swiftly and precisely following all required emergency safety protocols without hesitation. According to reports, he executed every step of the procedure with complete success. Specifically, the pilot drained the aircraft’s fuel tanks and brought the jet down without deploying the landing gear, effectively belly-landing the aircraft in a controlled manner.

Hellenic Air Force General Staff official statement
The Hellenic Air Force General Staff (HAF GS) released an official statement regarding the emergency landing. “On Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 13:45, an F-16 aircraft of the 335th Squadron of the 116th Combat Wing, participating in a training flight, carried out an emergency landing at Zakynthos Airport due to a malfunction. The pilot is in good health. The causes of the incident are under investigation,” the statement reads.
Runway closed following the emergency landing
It is worth noting that operations at Zakynthos “Dionysios Solomos” Airport were temporarily suspended following the Hellenic Air Force F-16’s emergency landing. Airport operator Fraport Greece announced that the runway would remain closed for operational reasons until further notice.
