A young foreign national arrested by Fire Department officials for a series of arson attacks in central Athens is expected to appear before an Athens investigative judge on Tuesday. The case of the arrested individual is being investigated with particular attention as his motives remain unclear at present.
According to officials from the Arson Crime Investigation Department, the perpetrator allegedly caused a total of 8 fires targeting cars and garbage bins in central Athens over recent days, striking different streets each time. The firefighters who took over the investigation of the cases tracked down the foreign national through visual evidence and citizen testimonies. He was located and arrested following an arrest warrant issued against him by prosecutorial authorities.
Specialist investigators from the fire service are seeking to understand the perpetrator’s motives, including whether he faces any psychological issues – a possibility that does not appear to be confirmed at present – or whether the reasons were personal or of another nature. Depending on how the case develops, other police services will also be briefed to determine whether this individual has previously engaged the attention of authorities or was even on the “radar” of services for illegal activity.
