A shocking security camera video from Gastouni, in the Ilia regional unit of Greece, has sparked widespread outrage and disgust after capturing a vehicle deliberately running over and killing a stray dog. The footage shows a grey car approaching the spot where the defenceless animal was resting. The driver slows down, stops for a few seconds directly in front of the dog, and then — in a moment that has horrified viewers — deliberately drives over the animal before calmly leaving the scene.
Community mourns Sissy, a beloved stray who had lived in the neighbourhood for over 15 years
The incident has prompted an official response from the authorities, with the Greek Police Animal Protection Unit already informed and actively investigating the case. One key challenge, however, is that the vehicle’s licence plate is not clearly visible in the footage. The incident took place on 18 June in the Stathmos Gastouni area and has been formally reported to the Pineios Police Department. Authorities are making every effort to identify the driver, as the local community demands justice for the act of cruelty caught on camera. The incident has left residents deeply saddened, as the dog — known locally as Sissy — had lived in the area for over 15 years and was lovingly cared for by the neighbourhood. A local resident told Alpha TV that no one expected her to die this way, noting that Sissy was elderly and had poor eyesight and hearing. “If he had waited just one second, she would have moved away,” the resident said.
Animal welfare organisations put a bounty on the driver — PFPO offers €3,000 reward
The act of cruelty has mobilised animal welfare organisations across Greece, all of which are actively seeking information about the incident. Several groups have placed a bounty on the driver, offering a financial reward for any information that leads to his identification. Most notably, the Panhellenic Animal Welfare and Environmental Federation (PFPO) announced it is offering a €3,000 reward to anyone who contributes to locating or apprehending the person responsible.

Official statement by the Panhellenic Animal Welfare and Environmental Federation on the Gastouni incident
“Request for information regarding the investigation into the killing of a stray dog in Gastouni, Ilia. The Panhellenic Animal Welfare and Environmental Federation has submitted an official request to the Gastouni-Pineios Police Department, seeking an update on the progress of the investigation into the killing of a stray dog by a vehicle in Gastouni, Ilia. The incident, which was captured on video and has received widespread media and social media attention, has provoked intense outrage and concern among local residents, citizens, and animal welfare organisations across the country. In its letter, the Federation requests to be informed — to the extent permitted by law — whether a criminal case file has been opened, whether those involved have been identified or are being sought, whether available evidence has been collected and assessed, and whether the procedures prescribed under current animal protection legislation have been initiated. The Panhellenic Animal Welfare and Environmental Federation acknowledges the work of the competent authorities and recognises that the investigation of such incidents requires adequate time and adherence to due legal process. However, it emphasises that effectively addressing cases of animal abuse and killing is a matter of significant public interest and contributes to reinforcing citizens’ sense of justice and security. Protecting animals is not only a legal obligation of the state, but also an indicator of civilisation and social responsibility. For this reason, the Federation will continue to monitor the development of this case and to support every effort to bring it to full resolution.”
