Greece battles 36 wildfires in 24 hours as firefighters work to contain five active blazes across the country, with emergency services on high alert.

The rural and forest wildfires that occurred across the country in the last twenty-four hours reached 36, with the Fire Service having immediately dealt with 31 in their initial stages. However, firefighters are still battling on the “fiery” front against five more.

Specifically, regarding the fire that broke out on Saturday afternoon in western Thessaloniki, above the Inner Ring Road, it is now under control and there is no danger of spread. Dry grass, garbage, and a makeshift structure were burned. However, the wildfire in Choristi, Drama is burning low vegetation areas while no residential areas are threatened. 25 firefighters were mobilized with 1 ground team from the 7th EMODE, 8 vehicles, 3 aircraft and 1 helicopter.

It should be noted that local investigative offices, as well as teams from the Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes (D.A.E.E.), are investigating the causes of the wildfires.

Finally, the Fire Service calls on all citizens to be particularly careful and in case of fire, for their own safety, to faithfully follow the instructions of the competent authorities.
