A 3-year-old girl is in critical condition in the ICU of Aglaia Kyriakou Children’s Hospital after being seriously injured in Menidi, when she was hit by a car in a Roma settlement. The incident occurred around 8:00 PM at a Roma camp at the intersection of Saranta Martyron and Melouna streets, when a vehicle struck the girl while the driver was attempting to reverse out of a parking spot.
The 3-year-old was initially transported to Thriasio Hospital and then transferred to Aglaia Kyriakou Children’s Hospital, where she is fighting for her life. Police are searching for the child’s parents as part of criminal proceedings for child neglect and abandonment. According to ERT, two days after the accident, the parents have not visited the hospital where their daughter remains in critical condition.
Menidi: Concerns grow over condition of 3-year-old hit by car
The incident has once again highlighted the problematic living conditions of minors in settlements across Western Attica, with “The Smile of the Child” organization reporting that in September 2024 they received an anonymous report about child neglect by parents. Specifically, children were reportedly eating from garbage bins and living in poor conditions, while there were also allegations of physical abuse by their parents.
“The Smile of the Child” maintains that they had informed the relevant authorities and that if appropriate protective measures had been taken in time, similar incidents might have been prevented.
