The 25-year-old mother and her 25-year-old partner, who are accused of abusing the three-year-old girl in Chania, have been ordered to remain in detention. The child has been hospitalized for the past week in the Pediatric ICU of Heraklion University Hospital (PAGNI) according to ERTNews. Specifically, the parents are charged with attempted murder and causing dangerous bodily harm to the 3-year-old child. It should be noted that, shortly after 10 am on Saturday (30/05) the minor’s parents were brought before the investigating magistrate. They had been prosecuted for attempted murder of the minor, and today they gave their testimony before the prosecutor.
3-year-old abuse case in Chania – Parents failed to provide adequate explanations
According to neakriti.gr, the two defendants did not provide adequate explanations for the manner and circumstances under which the three-year-old girl was transported severely injured, and after their testimonies they were sent to prison. It should be noted that the 3-year-old girl has been taken off ventilation but continues to be hospitalized in the ICU of PAGNI, while her siblings are being cared for at Chania Hospital.
The charges against the mother and her partner
It is recalled that on Tuesday (26/5) the 25-year-old Roma mother of Bulgarian nationality and on Wednesday (27/5) her 25-year-old partner of Pakistani origin were convicted in summary proceedings, the first with the charge of false testimony and the second for illegal entry into the country. The court imposed on him a prison sentence of three years without suspension and a 5,000 euro fine, while the 25-year-old was sentenced to three years imprisonment.
The two were brought on Wednesday (27/5) before the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Chania First Instance Court, where they were charged with the felony prosecutions for attempted murder against the three-year-old. The 25-year-old is expected to be assigned legal support by the prosecutor’s office, as she had initially refused to be defended by a lawyer. Her 27-year-old partner from Pakistan has a lawyer, who left open the possibility of not taking on the case, as this will depend on the case file that reaches him.
The 3-year-old’s health condition
The news regarding the health progress of the three-year-old girl, who continues to be hospitalized in the Pediatric ICU of PAGNI, is encouraging. After being taken off ventilation a few days ago, she remains under close monitoring.
