Four years were needed to shed light on the dark aspects of one of the most chilling cases that occupied the prosecuting authorities of Thessaloniki. The murder of the 24-year-old Pakistani man, whose dismembered body was found in the coastal area of Kalochori in the summer of 2022, now appears to be connected to a personal confrontation that evolved into years of persecution ending in death.
Thessaloniki: How the dismembered man case was solved after four years
The case had shocked everyone from the first moment. A fisherman spotted a human torso without head and lower limbs in the waters of Thermaikos Gulf. A few days later, at the same location, a human limb was found tied inside a plastic bag containing bricks and cement, in an apparent attempt to keep it on the seabed and prevent its discovery. The scene that authorities encountered suggested a crime planned with the sole purpose of erasing every trace of the victim.
Today, the investigation by the Northern Greece Organized Crime Unit appears to have completed most pieces of the puzzle. Police identified four compatriots of the victim as alleged perpetrators in the homicide, with a 37-year-old arrested in Thessaloniki and considered the main suspect, while the others allegedly fled the country immediately after the crime.
How the fatal jealousy began
What gives particular dimension to the case is that the confrontation between victim and alleged perpetrator did not arise days before the murder. On the contrary, according to case file evidence, it began in 2020 and gradually evolved into a personal revenge case.
The 24-year-old worked at the 37-year-old’s business in western Thessaloniki. There, according to the investigation, he developed a relationship with his employer’s wife. When the relationship was revealed, a period of tension followed, with complaints, threats, violent incidents and continuous pressure on the victim. Police estimate that from that point forward, the young man became a target of specific individuals.
The situation reportedly became so pressing that the 24-year-old decided to leave Thessaloniki. He had previously attempted to flee to North Macedonia, but was arrested and remained imprisoned for approximately 14 to 15 months. After his release, he settled in Tympaki, Heraklion, believing he could leave behind what had preceded.
Passion betrayed him
Despite the distance, however, the bond with the woman did not appear to be severed. The two sides continued to communicate frequently by phone, something that, according to evidence collected by investigators, was known to the 37-year-old. This development appears to have kept alive a conflict that had already exceeded the limits of a personal dispute.
Police now believe that the 24-year-old’s return to Thessaloniki in June 2022 was decisive. The young man traveled from Crete to meet the woman. According to the case file, hours after his arrival in the city, he was kidnapped from the Railway Station area and transported to Kalochori. There, at a seaside location, the final act of the case is estimated to have unfolded.
Investigators maintain that after the murder followed the dismemberment of the body and then its transport to the sea by small boat that was removed from the area. The goal, according to authorities, was to eliminate traces of the crime and make identification of the victim or perpetrators impossible. However, the findings in Thermaikos not only were not lost, but became the starting point of a multi-year investigation that ultimately led to arrests and identifications.
The kidnapping that revealed the perpetrators
Particular importance is also attributed to an earlier incident revealed during the investigation. Police found that in 2020, three of the persons allegedly involved in the homicide had kidnapped a fellow villager of the victim, trying to extract information about the 24-year-old’s whereabouts. This specific abduction, which was solved within the same case file, is considered by investigators a critical element depicting the duration and intensity of the confrontation.
Witness statements, video footage, telephone communication data, forensic findings and special investigative acts conducted in recent years played a significant role in solving the case. Also considered decisive was confirmation by the woman of the bond she maintained with the victim and their last communications before his disappearance.
Meanwhile, during searches at the 37-year-old’s residence and workplace, a fake driver’s license, seven knives and a folding knife were found, leading to a separate case file for weapons law violations and forgery. He denies any involvement in both the murder and the earlier kidnapping case.
Death mechanism remains mystery
The forensic examination failed to determine the cause of death with certainty, as the body was in an advanced state of decay and saponification. The cuts found were attributed to post-mortem dismemberment, leaving open critical questions about the exact circumstances under which the 24-year-old lost his life.
What now emerges from the case file is that the homicide is not treated as a momentary burst of anger, but as the end of a confrontation that allegedly developed over years. And perhaps this is the most revealing element of the case: that behind the macabre discovery in Thermaikos, investigators see a story of obsession, revenge and persistent persecution that, according to their evidence, began long before the night of the murder.
