A 37-year-old Georgian man was unanimously found guilty by the Athens Mixed Jury Court of Appeal for the heinous murder of his 29-year-old estranged wife in May 2019 in Kallithea. The court imposed the maximum sentence of life imprisonment for premeditated murder, committed in a calm mental state, rejecting all requests for recognition of mitigating circumstances.
The 29-year-old’s ordeal and the timeline of the Kallithea crime
The horrific murder took place on May 13, 2019, when the perpetrator, after dropping the couple’s two minor children at school, returned to the 29-year-old’s home and strangled her with his bare hands and her belt. According to the verdict, the woman’s death resulted from violent constriction of her neck, while a struggle had preceded the fatal attack, as the unfortunate woman tried to defend herself.
The case had shocked public opinion not only due to the brutality of the crime, but also because the 29-year-old was a victim of chronic domestic violence. As proven in court, the defendant systematically abused her, with a characteristic incident in February 2019 when he caused her serious injuries, while in another case he had tied and gagged her with tape to make her shut up.
