A tragedy occurred on Tuesday (15/7) at the Vikos Gorge, where a 25-year-old lost her life, according to reports from ERT. The young tourist, originally from the USA, was at the location with her group and was hiking. Information from public television reports that the 25-year-old fell from a height of 40 meters, resulting in extremely serious injuries and was rescued unconscious.

As soon as the incident became known, a rescue operation was immediately launched. Civil Protection and the Fire Service requested a helicopter for transport which departed at 13:00 from Elefsis. The helicopter managed, despite obstacles due to strong winds, to approach the location and pick up the injured woman, who succumbed to her injuries.
Around 16:00 the helicopter landed at Ioannina airport, where an ambulance from EKAB collected the young woman’s body. A total of 13 firefighters from the 2nd Fire Station of Ioannina, the 5th EMAK and the 5th EMODE operated at the scene.
